1 Dead in La Mesa Auto Accident on Interstate 8 and Fletcher Parkway

LA MESA, CA (May 20, 2024) – Late Saturday night, a wrong-way driver died in a brutal head-on crash on Interstate 8 and Fletcher Parkway.

The crash happened at about 11:41 when a driver traveled west in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 8 from Fletcher Parkway.

Then, the male driver, in a white Chevrolet truck, struck a Honda Accord head-on just east of 70th Street.

As a result, the male driver of the Honda sustained major injuries and was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, CHP said.

After the crash, the driver of a Chevrolet tried to flee the scene on foot and was struck and killed by a black Ford truck while running across the westbound lanes. The Ford truck was driven by a male with a female passenger; neither was injured. 

Authorities have not yet determined if alcohol was a factor for the wrong-way driver of the Chevrolet, but it has been ruled out for the drivers of the Honda and the Ford involved in the incident.

As of 3:32 p.m. Sunday, three lanes on westbound I-8 east of Lake Murray are temporarily blocked, according to Caltrans.

At this time, the circumstances that led to the crash remained unclear. Once additional details become available, the public will be notified.

Due to the limited information available, the authorities continued to investigate the crash.
