Three-Vehicle Crash in Chico Kills 1, Injures 2
CHICO, CA (March 27, 2019) – One person was killed and two others were injured in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 99, north of Chico, on a rainy Monday at around 12:30 p.m.
Logan Callahan, public information officer for the California Highway Patrol, said that investigators believe the driver of a blue Honda sedan lost control of his car and entered the oncoming southbound lane of the highway near Gaia Way. A red 2001 Toyota 4Runner that was traveling south on the highway struck the Honda which was also struck by a silver 2017 Dodge pickup traveling south behind it.
The male driver of the Honda, whose name and age were not immediately released, died at the scene. The driver of the Toyota, a 20-year-old from Oroville; and the driver of the Dodge, a 41-year-old from Red Bluff, suffered minor injuries and were transported to a hospital for treatment.
An investigation of the incident is ongoing. It was unclear what caused the Honda to lose control and veer into oncoming traffic.
The crash prompted the closure of both lanes of Highway 99 during the initial investigation. All lanes were reopened by 3 p.m. Monday.
Our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the victim.
