Small Plane Crashes onto Roof of Torrance Shopping Center Killing One and Badly Injuring Another
TORRANCE, CA (September 19, 2019) – One person was killed and another one was critically injured after a single-engine Cessna crashed on the roof of a building near Torrance Municipal Airport, officials said.
The crash occurred around 12:15 p.m. at Rolling Hills Plaza in the 25300 block of Crenshaw Boulevard.
FAA officials said the Cessna 177 crashed less than a mile east of the Torrance airport shortly after taking off. The plane slammed into the backside of the strip mall and landed on top of the California Pizza Kitchen and Joey’s Smokin’ BBQ.
The aircraft appeared to have gone through the roof and into a covered patio seating area. Fire officials rushed to cover a fuel leak with a blanket of foam.
There were two men on board the plane. Police officers were able to help both occupants out of the plane, but one man was pronounced dead at the scene. It wasn’t disclosed if he was the pilot.
The other man was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
Authorities are still investigating the crash.
