Wrong-Way Crash on Loop 202 Red Mountain Injures 1 Driver

Tempe, AZ (March 24, 2023) – Early Friday morning, a male driver sustained injuries in a wrong-way crash on Loop 202.

The crash on Loop 202 in Tempe happened just before 4 a.m. on March 24.

DPS said a wrong-way driver was first reported to have gotten on the freeway at Sky Harbor and was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes. 

Troopers were attempting to stop the wrong-way driver when the suspect crashed into another vehicle near Scottsdale Road.

Investigators said the driver of the wrong-way vehicle, a woman only identified as being in her 30s, was going the wrong way on purpose in an effort to hurt herself.

The driver who was struck by the wrong-way driver, a man, suffered serious injuries in the crash but is expected to be OK.

Further investigation into this crash is ongoing.
