Minor Injuries Reported in San Rafael Vehicle Crash on Fifth Avenue and Irwin Street
SAN RAFAEL, CA (December 25, 2023) – Saturday afternoon, an officer suffered injuries in a disastrous auto accident on Fifth Avenue and Irwin Street.
At around 3:00 p.m., an officer with emergency lights and siren activated was on the way to respond to an in-progress domestic violence situation. Then, the officer headed west on Fifth Avenue, approaching Irwin Street in downtown San Rafael.
Also, emergency preemption was employed and turned the westbound Fifth Avenue traffic signal to green while turning the Irwin Street signal to red. When the patrol car approached the intersection, a northbound vehicle on Irwin Street didn’t yield to the emergency lights, siren, and red traffic signal. The vehicle drove into the intersection where it crashed with the patrol car.
As a result, the vehicle driver suffered no injuries in the crash. However, the officer sustained a minor injury.
Also, the authorities do not suspect that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash and no one was arrested.
“This serves as a reminder to yield and stop for emergency vehicles using emergency lights and sirens, it’s the law,” said the San Rafael Police Department on social media Saturday night.
At this time, the circumstances that led to the crash remained unclear. Once additional details become available, the public will be notified.
Due to the limited information available, the authorities continued to investigate the crash.
