1 Killed and 1 Hurt in West Covina Car Accident
WEST COVINA, CA (March 19, 2019) – A man died while a drunk driver sustained injuries in an SUV and car collision on 10 Freeway on March 14.
The collision happened around 9:50 p.m. on the westbound 10 Freeway west of Barranca Street. The CHP added that an 89-year-old La Puente male resident died at the area. However, authorities did not release his identity due to pending notification of family.
57-year-old Gerardo Alvarez of La Puente traveled in a 1998 Ford Explorer. Afterward, his vehicle struck the rear of a 2002 Nissan Altima. Reports revealed that Alvarez drove his car “at an unsafe speed for changing traffic conditions.”
Alvarez’s vehicle rolled over and landed on its roof. Meanwhile, the Nissan driver sustained moderate injuries.
Responders transported Alvarez in serious condition with a head injury. Furthermore, authorities placed him under arrest.
“Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in this collision,” the CHP stated.
As a result of the crash, two lanes closed for around three hours during the investigation.
