Fatal Accident on I-80 Involving Car and Semi at Pomona Street Off-Ramp
CROCKETT, CA (May 25, 2018) – One person was fatally injured in a big rig crash on Freeway 80, early Friday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a man was driving a 1999 Toyota Camry on the 80 Freeway, when he approached slowed traffic around 4:00 AM. He failed to slow down and rear-ended a big rig that was stopped in the eastbound lane of traffic at the Pomona Street off-ramp because of an earlier wreck in the same area at around 1:20 AM.
The man killed in the collision was a 67-year-old resident of Fairfield, but more details about his identity were not immediately released. CHP officers and paramedics carried out CPR until the victim was airlifted to the Kaiser Hospital in Vallejo, where he was later pronounced dead. The man and woman in the truck were not hurt in the crash.
The collision caused massive backups on the freeway but traffic was reported to be back to normal at around 10:00 AM.
Alcohol or drugs are not considered to be a factor in the collision, but authorities are still investigating. Any witnesses are urged to call Contra Costa CHP in Martinez at (925) 646-4980.
