Salvador Joaquin Arrested after Accident near Highway 138
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, CA (May 26, 2018) – One person died and three other people were injured in a hit-and-run crash on the 15 Freeway that sent a car with four occupants off the freeway and 150- 250 feet down an embankment.
The incident occurred at around 11:45 PM on Saturday evening, near the intersection of the 15 Freeway and Highway 138. 23-year-old Salvador Joaquin of Santa Ana was driving a 2017 Chevrolet when he turned his car to the right from the fast southbound lane of the freeway, for unknown reasons.
The vehicle then struck the rear of a 2007 Nissan with four people inside.
The Nissan’s driver lost control of the car and veered to the right, hit the right-shoulder guardrail, overturned, and rolled between 150 to 250 feet down a steep embankment, just east of the freeway. Two passengers were thrown from the car and one man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not immediately confirmed.
The driver, a 42-year-old woman of Pomona, sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. Two Chino passengers in their 20’s were injured. The woman sustained major injuries and the man sustained moderate injuries. There is no update on their current condition. Joaquin was not injured in the crash.
At least three lanes of the southbound freeway were not passable for several hours after the crash.
Authorities located the Chevrolet and Joaquin about a quarter-mile from the accident scene on the southbound 15 Freeway, north of Highway 138. He admitted being the driver of the Chevrolet and was later arrested and booked into jail. CHP believed that alcohol was involved in the incident. Jail records show Joaquin was booked on suspicion of murder, driving under the influence resulting in bodily injury, and hit-and-run from a scene of death and injury. He was on a no-bail hold as of Sunday.
No additional information has been provided by officials at this time.
