1 Killed and 1 Hurt in San Diego Car Crash on 5 Freeway
SAN DIEGO, CA (February 20, 2020) – Tuesday afternoon, one victim was killed and another sustained injuries in a single-vehicle crash on the 5 Freeway.
Authorities located a Toyota RAV 4 flipped over in the 3000 block of Garnet Avenue, just before rush hour. The airborne vehicle reportedly landed on the east side of the I-5 overpass around 1:45 p.m.
Witnesses say the driver traveled north on the 5 Freeway before veering over the guard rail and overturning multiple times. The Toyota eventually landed on its roof on Garnet Avenue. The SUV then struck an electric box, causing it to strike a white sedan. However, the driver of the sedan remained uninjured.
Authorities pronounced the Toyota driver dead on scene as a result of the impact. He was later described as a man in his mid-50s. Meanwhile, a second victim was taken to a local hospital for further treatment of injuries. However, there has been no update on their condition.
“I didn’t really know that a car was coming down the hill,” Nick Murray stated. “I just heard a big bang when something hit the side of my car, and then I looked over and this RAV was upside down.”
In addition, it is still unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision.
The crash shut down Garnet Avenue from the Mission Bay Drive intersection to the Moraga Avenue intersection. San Diego police advised drivers to avoid the area. However, the roadway has since reopened.
