One Killed after West Covina Big Rig Crash on 10 Freeway near Citrus Street
WEST COVINA, CA (September 30, 2019) – One person died and another was injured in a big rig crash on 10 Freeway on Thursday, September 26.
The crash involving several semi-trucks, happened just before 3 a.m. on the freeway just west of Citrus Street.
Authorities had the eastbound lanes of the freeway shut down for a previous crash. Then an approaching truck pulling two trailers failed to stop in time, CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez stated.
The big rig crashed into the back and pushed forward another truck, which slammed into a third big rig. The third big rig then struck a Honda Civic stopped in front of it.
The driver of the first big rig suffered major injuries. The driver of the truck he crashed into died at the scene, Jimenez stated.
The other two drivers involved were not hurt, CHP reported.
The chain reaction crash resulted in a diesel fuel spill on the roadway, Caltrans said.
According to CHP, at around 10:20 a.m., three eastbound lanes reopened for morning traffic. All lanes reopened at around 1 p.m., officials stated.
Authorities did not release the identity of the person who died in the crash.
