Youxing Zhang Killed in Bicycle Crash on Highway 24 [OAKLAND, CA]

83-Year-Old Bicyclist Dies after Crash with Car on Highway 24 at Martin Luther King Jr. Way

 
OAKLAND, CA (May 15, 2019) – A bicyclist was killed following a traffic collision with a car Wednesday afternoon on Highway 24 in Oakland.
 
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s division has identified the victim as Youxing Zhang, 83, of Oakland.
 
Just after 3:00 p.m., CHP officials responded to eastbound Highway 24, just West of the Martin Luther King Jr. Way off-ramp after receiving reports of a collision between a vehicle and a bicycle.
 
Arriving officers learned that Zhang was riding his bicycle along the right-hand shoulder when he crossed into traffic lanes.
 
An eastbound silver Toyota Prius on the second lane of the highway was unable to stop in time and hit Zhang at about 60 mph. Zhang was pronounced dead at the scene.
 
At least one eastbound lane was closed for the investigation.
 
Authorities are still working on the incident and urging witnesses to come forward with information.
