22-Year-Old Woman and Her 8-Month-Old Baby Dead in Solo Car Accident Between Manchester Drive and Independence Boulevard
SALINAS, CA (January 14, 2018) – A fatal solo crash was reported early Sunday morning around 1 AM, along Constitution Boulevard, between Manchester Drive and Independence Boulevard.
A BMW was traveling down Constitution Boulevard with high speeds when it lost control and swerved out of the lane, hitting a curb, and crashing into a tree.
All three occupants inside were ejected from the car, including 22-year-old Yenny Carbajal and her 8-month-old baby boy, Joshua Carbajal. Yenny was pronounced dead at the scene, while Joshua was hospitalized and later pronounced deceased. The unidentified 23-year-old male driver who is suspected to be Yenny’s boyfriend, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. He remains in critical condition.
Police believe that the speed the car was traveling and the sobriety of the driver contributed to this fatal crash. It was also stated that there was a lack of seatbelt use, including the improper safening of the child safety seat.
Authorities and prosecutors are still gathering evidence and investigating the details of the crash. It is yet to be determined what criminal charges the 23-year-old driver will face. The BMW’s bumper flew into the air and landed in the tree’s branches, and roadways were blocked with debris from the crash and scattered items from inside of the car.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the victim’s families with expenses. They are trying to transport Yenny and Joshua’s bodies to Oaxaca, Mexico for burial services.
