Wrong-Way Car Accident in Palo Alto Turns Deadly

PALO ALTO, CA (June 18, 2019) – A wrong-way driver died in Sunday’s fiery crash along Highway 101 near University Avenue.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal accident happened around 2 a.m. CHP officers first responded to a report of a car traveling southbound in the northbound lanes.

Shortly after, the wrong-way vehicle collided with a northbound driver, pinning the wrong-way driver inside the heap of metal. Shortly after, the vehicle caught on fire, resulting in the driver’s death.

According to Officer Dave Morey, the driver whom the wrong-way person struck suffered a broken leg and other injuries.

It is unclear at this point whether drugs or alcohol played a role, but CHP officers are looking further into this.

Following the accident, a separate crash occurred along the southbound side as a BMW driver grew distracted by the fiery crash and was rear-ended by a Honda Civic. As a result, the Civic spun out before coming to a stop.

The three passengers and the driver of the Civic attempted to exit the vehicle when a blue Nissan traveling south struck the Civic and injuring two Civic passengers and the Civic driver.

Officers subsequently arrested the Nissan driver on suspicion of felony DUI.

Distractions play a major factor in car accidents, which should always remind us to drive defensively and cautiously. Put your smartphone away and focus on the road. Slow down and be alert at all times. By exercising these tips, we can minimize these dangers.
