TACOMA, WA (October 1, 2020) – Wednesday morning, a woman suffered injuries in a hit-and-run crash on 5 Freeway near 56th Street in Tacoma.

The troopers and medics came to the crash scene at around 6:20 a.m. The incident happened on the north 5 Freeway ramp, near 56th Street. The authorities responded after receiving a report of a hit-and-run accident, Trooper Ryan Burke of the Washington State Patrol said.

When the authorities arrived, they located the woman the vehicle struck with significant injuries. Responders took her to St. Joseph Medical Center’s trauma unit.

Meanwhile, a witness revealed that the woman walked along the shoulder of 5 Freeway. Then, the hit-and-run driver steered and hit her as she walked near the fog line. The witness revealed that the driver briefly stopped. However, the driver fled before the time troopers came to the scene.

As of this time, the troopers and police are searching for a silver Nissan Altima. They added that the vehicle might be missing a right headlamp and right side-view mirror. It could also have a broken windshield.

The authorities urge anyone who saw the collision or has information to call Burke or call 911.

Facts about Pedestrians and Accidents

Pedestrians have the right of way at any crosswalk or intersection. Therefore, it’s a driver’s responsibility to yield and be prepared to stop.

While car accidents are far more common than pedestrian accidents, there is still reason to be wary when traveling on foot.

Furthermore, common locations for these pedestrian incidents include shopping center entrances, street corners, and even highways.

“Pedestrian accidents do not occur as much as motor vehicle accidents. Nevertheless, pedestrian accidents tend to include more serious injuries,” says Tyler Toomey, a practicing attorney at Sweet Lawyers.
