2 Detained after South Los Angeles Traffic Incident on 78th Street

SOUTH LOS ANGELES, CA (May 25, 2020) – Friday morning, a wild police chase ended with a crash on 78th Street near Main Street.

According to reports, two people were arrested after the chase involving a stolen truck. The pursuit started in Pomona and ended in South Los Angeles after a wrong-way, hit-and-run crash on the on-ramp of the 110 Freeway.

An official with the Pomona Police Department explained that the chase started in Pomona. The chase commenced when the officials found out that a vehicle had been reported stolen in the 1000 block of Ninth Street. The authorities tried to stop the driver. However, the driver fled and the chase began.

The Pursuit in South Los Angeles

The pursuit continued west down the 10 Freeway through the San Gabriel Valley. Then, they entered the Los Angeles area. As the pursuit reached the Baldwin Park area, the California Highway Patrol officers handled the chase.

After several minutes, the stolen truck exited the freeway at a high rate of speed. The driver traveled recklessly on surface streets and had erratically weaved through cars. The suspect also drove across traffic lines and drove the wrong way through residential and commercial areas.

The Los Angeles Police Department units followed the truck, as well as one air unit.

Afterward, the truck then drove around the Florence neighborhood of South L.A. for about 30 minutes. Then, he proceeded on the 110 Freeway.

Just after 11:00 a.m., another vehicle clipped the stolen truck as it attempted to drove across several lanes of the freeway. The impact caused the pickup to spin. However, the driver didn’t stop and continue traveling north on the shoulder of the southbound 110 Freeway.

As the suspect continued driving, he drove the wrong way and crashed head-on with another car while attempting to exit the freeway via an on-ramp. This second crash failed to stop the truck. The suspect then heads down the ramp.

Damages of the Ongoing South Los Angeles Chase

At this time, it’s still not confirmed whether the wrong-way crash resulted in injuries.

It was about 11:30 a.m. when the truck was on surface streets again. However, another truck managed to trap the pursuit vehicle on a narrow road. Due to this, the officers went out of their cars with guns drawn. Then, they approached the stolen truck.

However, the stolen truck managed to push the other truck out of the way and proceeded onto another street. Unfortunately, the authorities noticed that smoke began to appear from the back of the pursuit vehicle. Afterward, the rear left tire was removed.

Despite having incomplete tires, the vehicle slowly headed through a residential area while patrol units continue the pursuit.

Just before 11:50 a.m., the chase finally ended when the truck abruptly stopped in the middle of the road on 78th Street near Main Street.

Two people went out of the driver’s side and fled on foot down the tree-lined street. However, several officers also followed them on foot and managed to take them in custody.

The police took hold of one of the suspects on a sidewalk just outside of a fenced-in yard.

What Follows after the Police Pursuit and Crash on 78th Street

At this time, the charges against the two unidentified suspects are still undisclosed.
