58-Year-Old Coarsegold Woman Fatally Injured in Crash near Avenue 240
VISALIA, CA (April 24, 2018) – A two-vehicle collision on State Route 65 claimed the life of a 58-year-old woman, late Tuesday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 11:30 AM, just south of Avenue 240 near Lindsay. A Volkswagen, driven by a 58-year-old woman from Coarsegold, was headed southbound on State Route 65 with a speed reportedly exceeding the designated 55 mph speed limit.
Meanwhile, 57-year-old Michael McCoy of Bakersfield, was traveling north on the highway in a Chevrolet, reportedly within the speed limit.
As per the statements of witnesses, the Volkswagen driver was distracted and failed to observe the slowing traffic ahead of her. The woman had the opportunity to step on her brakes and swerved to the right to avoid the vehicle in front, but she over-corrected and lost control of the car. The vehicle went in a southeasterly direction toward the Chevrolet. McCoy was unable to react in time as the Volkswagen’s passenger side slammed into the front of his vehicle.
The force of the collision pushed both vehicles in a northeasterly direction, where they finally came to a rest on the east side of the roadway. Both the Volkswagen and the Chevrolet received major damages from the impact of the crash.
McCoy reportedly sustained minor injuries, while the driver of the Volkswagen was rushed to Kaweah Delta Medical Center. She later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. Both drivers were secured in a seatbelt when the collision happened, and both vehicles deployed airbags. The victim’s identity was not immediately released, pending notification of family.
