Victims of Fatal Merced Head-On Collision near Canton Road Identified
MERCED, CA (June 24, 2018) – Two people were killed early Sunday evening and multiple people were hospitalized following a collision between a van and a truck. 84-year-old Victoria Hernandez of Rancho Cucamonga and 31-year-old Jose Alvarado Panigua of El Nido, were identified as the fatalities in this incident.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision took place around 5:20 PM on Highway 59 near Canton Road. In an attempt to pass a big rig, a northbound 1992 Mazda truck, driven by Alvarado Panigua, entered opposing traffic and collided with a 2012 Toyota Sienna driven by 47-year-old Mariano Ibarra Pena.
Alvarado Panigua, the lone occupant of the Mazda, and Hernandez, a passenger in the Toyota, sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Pena and his other passengers: 11-year-old Sol Ibarra, 40-year-old Zendi Ibarra, 10-year-old Reyli Ibarra, 8-year-old Mariano Ibarra, and 3-year-old Ednna Ibarra, were all hospitalized. Zendi was airlifted to the Doctor’s Medical Center after sustaining serious injuries, while Sol was flown to the Valley Children’s Hospital with major injuries. The remaining wounded Toyota occupants were transported to the Mercy Medical Center with minor to moderate injuries.
No other information has been released to the public at this time.
