Victor Talavera Dies, Suspect Jamal Darby Arrested in Hit-and-Run Crash on Anaheim Street

 
Long Beach, CA (August 14, 2020) – On Wednesday, police arrested the 33-year-old Jamal Darby for a hit-and-run on Anaheim Street where he killed the 57-year-old Victor Talavera, of Long Beach.
 
The fatal hit-and-run crash happened on July 24, Friday.
 
Preliminary investigation revealed Darby stole miscellaneous items from a Long Beach alcohol store in the 300 block area. Authorities said Talavera, the store clerk attempted to stop Darby and ran after him outside the store.
 
Talavera climbed onto the hood of Darby’s car in an effort to apprehend him. However, Darby did not stop but continued driving for about three blocks.
 
Furthermore, sources indicated Darby maneuvered to force Talavera off the car, knocked him into the eastbound lanes of Anaheim Street near Magnolia Avenue.
 
Talavera died at the scene.
 
Meanwhile, Darby immediately fled the scene.
 
Then, on Wednesday, at about 10:30 a.m., authorities found Darby near his residence on West 57th Street in Los Angeles’ Vermont-Slauson neighborhood.
 
Police arrested him on suspicion of murder, robbery, and burglary. His vehicle was seized as evidence.
 
Inmate records showed Darby is still in custody Wednesday night on $3 million bail.
 
Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
