Injuries Reported in Corning School Bus vs Car Accident on South Avenue and Kirkwood Road
CORNING, CA (May 15, 2022) – Thursday afternoon, Tyler Mitchell and Angelica Castillo suffered injuries in a crash on South Avenue.
The incident happened at about 1:45 p.m. east of South Avenue and Kirkwood Road.
According to reports, 19-year-old Tyler Mitchell of Red Bluff drove a 2010 Honda Accord. Meanwhile, 53-year-old Mark Smith of Orland drove a 1999 Thomas Westcoaster school bus. Smith traveled east on South Avenue ahead of the Honda.
As the bus traveled east, it stopped at the railroad tracks before the Kirkwood intersection. Then, a delivery van behind the bus also stopped behind Smith and waited for him to proceed over the railroad tracks.
Then, Smith continued past the railroad tracks and started turning left onto Kirkwood Road. Afterward, he moved into the westbound lane of South Avenue to pass. However, he crashed into the left rear of the bus.
As a result, Mitchell suffered a broken leg. Meanwhile, his 21-year-old passenger, Angelica Castillo of Chico, sustained minor injuries to her ankle. Afterward, responders took both of them to Enloe Medical Center in Chico for treatment.
Furthermore, 26 students occupied the bus at the time of the crash. Then, responders evaluated seven people at the scene but didn’t require hospitalization.
It is important to always abide by all traffic laws and to do your part to prevent devastating consequences to you and others. Thus, if you find yourself unable to safely operate a vehicle, there are always other options for transportation.
