Two Hurt after Sylmar Solo-Vehicle DUI Accident on San Fernando Road

SYLMAR, CA (May 2, 2019) – Two women suffered injuries following an alleged DUI crash in Sylmar on Wednesday, May 1.

At around 1:30 a.m., a gold sedan traveled southbound on San Fernando Road from Astoria Street at a high rate of speed. Then the vehicle went off the road, struck a tree and sheared a fire hydrant. After that, it crashed into a power pole and a street sign. Subsequently, it slid to the south side of Bleeker Street and struck another power pole and a fence, according to Officer Randie Ferraz of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division.

The sheared off fire hydrant sent water shooting up into power lines. This became a possible electrical hazard, said Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Firefighters extricated both a 20-year-old and 17-year-old woman from the wreckage of the one-vehicle crash. Paramedics then transported both to a hospital in critical condition.

Officers arrested the woman in her 20s on suspicion of DUI.

Prange said that crews received reports of at least two more male patients, but none were found.

Repair crews from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power repaired the power lines.

Approximately 30 LADWP customers were without power after the incident, Ferraz reported.
