Suspected DUI Driver Causes Fatal Collision near Deer Springs Road

ESCONDIDO, CA (October 27, 2018) – Two people were killed in a wrong-way crash on 15 Freeway, late Saturday night. Their names were not yet released by the authorities.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision took place at approximately 11:17 PM, near Deer Springs Road.

Before the incident, authorities reported that a 23-year-old Lake Elsinore man in a white Hyundai Elantra, was traveling north in the southbound lanes. A CHP officer started a traffic break near Highway 76 in an effort to stop the wrong-way driver. The vehicle did not stop and continued driving at a high speed. A short time after, he crashed into a gray Honda Civic that was traveling in the correct direction. Reports show that they Hyundai occupant was under the influence.

The Honda driver was pronounced dead on site by emergency responders. She was only identified as a a 20-year-old woman from Murrieta. Meanwhile, the suspect was taken to Palomar Medical Center, where he later died.

All lanes of southbound I-15 were closed from the time of the crash until about 2:30 AM. Alcohol was considered a factor in the crash, but an investigation is ongoing to determine additional contributing factors.
