MOUNTAIN CENTER, CA (July 21, 2019) – Two people were hospitalized following a head-on crash Saturday afternoon along Highway 74.

The crash happened around 4:38 p.m. near mile marker 86.28, between Palm Desert and Mountain Center.

Law enforcement officers along with paramedics arrived at the scene and found two heavily damaged vehicles, a gray Nissan Titan and a white Toyota pickup truck. Both drivers were injured from the crash and several bystanders attempted to provide aid.

According to witnesses, one of the victims sustained moderate injuries while the other driver suffered minor injuries. Both were transported to area hospitals for proper treatment.

The crash temporarily blocked Highway 74 in both directions.

It is unknown if speed, drugs and/or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Head-on collisions often occur because of speeding, distractions, and intoxication. Always be alert and watchful to those around you when driving. Maintain a safe speed and do not allow yourself to lose control by braking so suddenly that you skid. Slow down so that if there is an impact, this will greatly reduce the damage done and the risk of fatality.
