91-Year-Old Man and 86-Year-Old Woman Fatally Injured in Crash near Highway 120
SONORA, CA (July 15, 2018) – Two elderly Sonora residents were killed Sunday evening following a two-car accident on Highway 108.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at about 6:15 PM on Highway 108/120 at the Yosemite Junction. A westbound 2017 Ford Fiesta, driven by 42-year-old Berkeley resident Julieta Pisani-McCarthy, was attempting to make a left turn at the junction.
Pisani-McCarthy failed to observe an eastbound 1993 Toyota Camry and turned directly into its path. The driver of the Camry was unable to avoid the Fiesta and struck the front left side of the vehicle.
The 91-year-old Camry driver was flown to Memorial Medical Center. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. His 86-year-old female passenger died at the scene. Their identities have been withheld, pending notification of family members.
Pisani-McCarthy was also airlifted to Memorial after sustaining major injuries. Her passengers – 49-year-old Brian McCarthy, 8-year-old Nico McCarthy, and 6-year-old Catalina McCarthy – were transported to Adventist Health Sonora with minor injuries.
Alcohol and drugs were ruled out as possible contributing factors in the crash, which remains under investigation. No other information has been disclosed to the public at this time.
