ATWATER, CA (September 9, 2021) – Wednesday morning, a truck driver died in a crash on State Route 99 near Atwater Boulevard.
 
The incident occurred just before 1:30 a.m. on State Route 99 near Atwater Boulevard.
 
According to the CHP officers, the truck headed south on State Route 99 in a road construction area. Also, the investigators suspect that the truck driver’s speed played a role in the crash.
 
“The big rig swerved at the last minute to go into the number two tunnel. It struck the sand barrels that were in front of the temporary K-rails at the point of the offramp, which caused the big rig to overturn on its side and come to rest behind us,” stated CHP Sgt. Shane McConnell.
 
Meanwhile, the officers revealed that the driver failed to wear a seat belt. As a result, the crash ejected the driver from the vehicle. Then, he was pinned under the truck’s cab as it landed on its ride side.
 
The authorities declared the truck driver dead at the scene.
 
Reports confirmed that the big rig hauled wine while the tanker was empty.
 
Also, a lane of Highway 99 remained open as crews cleared the scene.
