Trooper Travis Rocz Involved in Tragic Auto Accident on Interstate 10 [Hankamer, TX]

Trooper and Deputy Injured in Fatal Hankamer Vehicle Crash on Interstate 10 near Mile Marker 815

HANKAMER, TX (May 31, 2023) – Tuesday morning, a tragic auto accident on Interstate 10 involved Trooper Travis Rocz.

The incident happened at about 6:50 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 near mile marker 815.

After the crash, responders airlifted Trooper Rocz to a Houston hospital to determine the extent of his injuries.

Also, responders transported a Chambers County deputy to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers confirmed that the driver of a white van succumbed to injuries at the scene. They also revealed that the crash started when a trooper tried to stop an intoxicated driver on the freeway.

“He made contact with the driver, determined that the driver was too inebriated to move the car. So, he exited his vehicle and moved the intoxicated driver’s vehicle to the inside shoulder, straddling the inside lane and inside shoulder,” said Sgt. Richard Standifer, a public information officer with Texas DPS.

Then, the trooper maneuvered his patrol car behind the other driver’s car.

Eventually, a Chambers County deputy also responded behind the trooper. Then, a second trooper, Rocz, arrived behind the other vehicles.

As Rocz got out of his patrol vehicle, the crash happened. The trooper witnessed the white van coming and attempted to get out of the way. However, the trooper’s vehicle was struck, and then the deputy’s vehicle was hit as well.

“His vehicle was not lying flat. It was kind of like on top of the patrol unit, which gave him enough space to be among the living on the bottom of that,” Sgt. Standifer added. “It truly is a miracle.”

During the crash, the Chambers County deputy who remained in his patrol vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Also, the intoxicated driver was still in the first trooper’s vehicle and suffered no injuries in the crash.
