Tragic Plane Collision Near Avra Valley Kills 2 [Marana, AZ]

Marana, AZ (February 20, 2025) – 2 people were reported as fatalities after a frightening plane collision near Avra Valley in southern Arizona on Wednesday morning.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the fatal incident happened around 8:30 a.m. near Sandario roads, west of Interstate 10.

Federal investigators have launched an investigation after the mid-air collision near Marana Regional Airport.

Marana Police Department responded to the crash.

Moreover, the NTSB identified the aircraft involved as a Cessna 172S and a Lancair 360 MK II. The Cessna, a four-seat single-engine plane, carried two people who survived without serious injuries.

Additionally, he Lancair, a two-seat single-engine kit aircraft, also had two occupants, both of whom lost their lives after a post-impact fire.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims. Investigators noted that Marana Regional Airport operates as an “uncontrolled field” without an air traffic control tower, requiring pilots to communicate with each other using a common traffic advisory frequency. Experts stress the importance of communication in such airspaces to prevent collisions.
