Nanci Martinez and 5-Year-Old Son Hospitalized after Fatal Two-Car Wreck near West 76th Street

LOS ANGELES, CA (July 9, 2018) – A toddler and an unborn baby were killed Monday evening and four others were hospitalized following a two-vehicle crash on 110 Freeway.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at about 10:00 PM near the West 76th Street exit. A 2009 Chevrolet Aveo, driven by 25-year-old Nanci Martinez of Los Angeles, pulled over to the right shoulder of the freeway for unknown reasons.

At the same time, a 2018 Mercedes GL250 made an unsafe turning movement from the No. 5 lane, and onto the right shoulder. The SUV struck the sound wall adjacent to the south shoulder before slamming into the rear of the Chevy Aveo.

Martinez and her passengers, a 5-year-old boy and a 3-year-old boy, were transported to the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. The younger boy sustained blunt force trauma and was pronounced dead at the hospital. His older brother sustained moderate injuries and is expected to recover soon. Unfortunately, Martinez, who was 7-months pregnant, lost her unborn child. The driver of the Mercedes-SUV, 67-year-old Ken Li of Torrance, and his passenger, 50-year-old Anita Li, were also hospitalized after sustaining injuries ranging from minor to major.

In the preliminary investigation, Ken Li claimed that his SUV had mechanical problems that resulted in the unsafe turning movement. It was also determined that the occupants of the Chevy Aveo were properly secured in their seats at the time of the collision.

Alcohol was ruled out as a possible contributing factor in the deadly crash. No other information has been released to the public at this time.
