Two McKinleyville Women Fatally Injured in Truck Collision near Bald Hills Road
ORICK, CA (May 23, 2018) – Two women were fatally injured in a collision on Highway 101, on Wednesday afternoon. The two deceased victims were identified as 46-year-old Terra Smith and 64-year-old Andra Cooper, both of McKinleyville.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident took place on the US 101 Freeway, just south of Bald Hills Road, around 1:20 PM. Smith and Cooper were traveling southbound in a red 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, about a mile north of Orick, when they veered off the road.
The Chevy then went up an embankment, overturned, and landed on its side in the northbound lanes toward oncoming traffic. It was then hit by a 2019 Peterbilt tractor-trailer pulling empty tank trailer, driven by 50-year-old James Rumble of Crescent City. Emergency responders pronounced Smith and Cooper dead at the scene, while Rumble was not injured in the collision.
Both directions of the US Highway 101 was closed during investigation and clean up, as stated by CHP Officer Paul Craft. It reopened around 4:45 PM, but heavy traffic continued for several hours.
