CHP Investigates Electric Scooter Crash on Spring Road in Moorpark
Moorpark, CA (February 25, 2025) – 17-year-old male teen sustained injuries in a crash on Spring Road.
A sheriff’s patrol vehicle struck a teen riding an electric scooter in Moorpark on Tuesday night, injuring him, authorities reported.
Ventura County Sheriff’s Capt. Nick Odenath stated that the crash occurred at 7:24 p.m. on Spring Road, near Roberts Avenue, just north of Los Angeles Avenue.
A deputy from the sheriff’s Moorpark station was driving southbound on Spring Road between Second Street and Roberts when the collision happened. Odenath noted that the crash occurred mid-block, not at a controlled intersection.
The 17-year-old male teen sustained injuries that appeared non-life-threatening.
Emergency responders transported him by ambulance to Los Robles Regional Medical Center, but his city of residence was not immediately available.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is handling the investigation, as is standard when a sheriff’s patrol car is involved in a crash.
CHP Officer Ryan Ayers stated on Wednesday that preliminary findings indicated the teen rode his scooter across Spring Road, directly into the deputy’s path, leading to the collision.
Investigators have not yet determined the deputy’s speed at the time. The deputy immediately stopped to assist and called for medical help.
CHP is reviewing any available footage of the crash, including dashboard camera recordings.
Ayers emphasized that pedestrians—including scooter, bike, and skateboard riders—should always check for oncoming traffic before crossing streets. He also warned that in low-light conditions, pedestrians may see approaching vehicles, but drivers may not always see them.
Ayers noted that pedestrian-involved crashes have increased across California since Assembly Bill 2147 took effect in 2023.
Although the law decriminalized some instances of jaywalking, it remains a violation if a pedestrian forces a driver to adjust their speed or direction.
Even a driver applying the brakes to avoid a pedestrian constitutes a violation.
Authorities urge anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant dashcam footage to contact the CHP’s Moorpark office at 805-553-0800.
