One Man Hospitalized after Logging Truck Accident on Interstate 5 near SR 16

TACOMA, WA (March 1, 2018) – Two logging trucks crashed into one another on Thursday morning on Interstate 5 near State Route 16, resulting in one seriously injured.

Around 9:45 AM, two logging trucks were in the middle lane of the 5 freeway approaching the 38th Street exit, when they approached heavy traffic. The first truck was able to slow down, but the second truck was unable to slow down quickly enough, crashing into the first truck’s loaded trailer.

Logs were sent into the second trucks cab, surprisingly not injuring the 34-year-old Rainier, Oregon man. The driver of the first truck, a 63-year-old Vader man suffered serious injuries and was transported to the Tacoma General Hospital for treatment. The man was reported to be in stable condition.

Two lanes were blocked for about five hours as police investigated and the wreckage was clean up for the road. Northbound traffic was backed up for over 5 miles into Lakewood. The Rainier man was cited for speeding, according to Trooper Brooke Bova.

When driving large vehicles such as semi-trucks, it is important to be aware of the traffic ahead. Because of the size and weight of these trucks, the time to slow down and stop takes longer than with a regular sedan or small car. Be cautious of sudden traffic changes and don’t speed while behind the wheel.
