41-Year-Old Santee Fatally Struck by DUI Driver while Jogging near Riverford Road, Michael Woodfill Arrested
LAKESIDE, CA (August 27, 2018) – On Monday evening, a female jogger was struck and killed by a DUI driver on North Woodside Avenue. The deceased victim was later identified as 41-year-old Susana Gotell of Santee.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 6:40 PM on N Woodside near Riverford Road, just north of State Route 67.
According to reports, 46-year-old Michael Woodfillof Santee was traveling eastbound in a 2017 Chevrolet truck when he drifted to the right and hit a chain link fence. He then overcorrected, steered the truck across the opposite lane, and struck Gotell on the north side of the road. Following the collision, the truck crashed into a dirt embankment and overturned.
The victim was transported to the Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego in critical condition. She later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. It is unclear if Woodfill was injured in the collision.
Officers determined Woodfill was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. He was arrested and booked into the San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter. No additional information has been released, as officials continue to investigate the incident.
