35-Year-Old Man Dies in DUI Crash on Calvine Road in Elk Grove
ELK GROVE, CA (November 9, 2019) – A man was arrested following a fatal DUI crash Saturday evening in South Sacramento, authorities said.
The crash happened around 7:55 p.m. at Calvine Road and Bader Road.
According to the CHP, a Toyota SUV carrying four people was traveling west on Calvine Road. It drove through the intersection with a traffic signal showing green.
At the same time, a black Honda Accord, driven by a 33-year-old Steven Bhardwaj of Plymouth, was heading north on Bader Road with two passengers. Bhardwaj failed to stop at the red light as he passed through the intersection when the Toyota SUV struck his right-front passenger door.
The impact caused both cars to veer off and hit a pedestrian crossing signal in the corner of the intersection.
A 35-year-old man from Sutter Creek, who was sitting in the front passenger seat of the Honda, died at the hospital, according to the CHP.
The Honda’s rear passenger, a 51-year-old man, was taken to the hospital with major injuries.
Bhardwaj suffered moderate injuries was also hospitalized. He was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, causing injury and death, according to officials.
Meanwhile, paramedics treated the four occupants of the Honda at the scene.
Further investigation of this fatal crash is underway.
