Gunman Suspect Santino William Legan Fatally Shot by Police after Shooting that Kills 3 and Injures 15

GILROY, CA (July 28, 2019) – Four people – including the suspect – died in a shooting Sunday night at the Gilroy Garlic Festival.

Police responded to the festival grounds at Christmas Hill Park near Miller Avenue and Uvas Park Drive. In addition, police responded at 5:40 p.m., toward the end of the third and final day of the world-famous garlic festival. The festival draws celebrity chefs from around the country and live performances by musicians.

The shooting began as the festival wound down. In addition, a band was playing their last act of the festival and was on stage when it began.

The suspect, a man in his 30s, wearing tactical gear and armed with an assault-style rifle, appeared to have crossed a creek that borders a parking lot, cut a security fence to enter the festival, and opened fire on the crowd.

One of those killed was 6-year-old Stephen Romero, whose mother and grandmother were also shot and being treated at Valley Center in San Jose but expected to survive.

A 13-year-old Keyla Salazar and a man in his 20s, Trevor Irby, were also killed.

Paramedics transported at least 13 others to two hospitals with gunshot wounds. Five people remained hospitalized on Monday. Three were in serious or fair condition. Two did not want their information released.

The suspect, identified Monday as Santino William Legan, was shot and killed by the police.

Some witnesses say there may be a second suspect, although it is unclear if the second suspect was engaged in the shooting, or in a support role.

Police stayed at the festival grounds throughout the night to search for a possible accomplice. The FBI was also assisting in the investigation.
