34-Year-Old Standley Reese Dies after Crashing into Pole in Oakland Street Race

OAKLAND, CA (June 29, 2019) – A man died following a street race crash late Saturday afternoon in Oakland.

The crash happened around 5:09 p.m. in the 5100 block of San Leandro Street in the city’s Melrose neighborhood.

According to police, a white 1992 Subaru Legacy station wagon raced with another vehicle. The Subaru lost control and veered across westbound lanes. It then hit a curb, overturned and struck a light pole.

As a result, police pronounced the Subaru driver dead at the scene. The Alameda County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased Monday as Standley Alford Reese, 34.

The car’s roof had to be cut off to extract Reese’s body.

Police estimated Reese’s speed to be at least 65 mph and confirmed he did not have a valid driver’s license.

The other vehicle did not stop and Oakland police are still looking for that vehicle and driver.

Anyone who witnessed the race is urged to contact traffic investigators at 510-777-8570.

We hope the family and friends of Standley Reese are surrounded by steadfast and comforting support as they grieve for the loss of their loved one.
