Speeding Minivan Hits Pole at West Cypress Road and O’Hara Avenue, Killing the Driver Sherman Tucker

OAKLEY, CA (June 22, 2019) – A man died following a high-speed crash Saturday morning in Oakley, CHP officials said.

The crash happened around 10:30 a.m., near the intersection of West Cypress Road and O’Hara Avenue.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a Chrysler Town & County minivan traveling at more than 100 mph struck a pole and a parked vehicle. After that, the van rolled, consequently trapping the driver inside.

Authorities pronounced the driver dead at the scene. Officers later identified the man as Sherman Tucker, 66, of Oakley.

Paramedics located one person in the parked car with serious injuries. They airlifted the victim to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. That patient is expected to make a full recovery.

Investigators are examining two scenarios that may have contributed to the accident. First, police believe Tucker suffered a medical emergency. As a result, a witness reported seeing him slumped over the wheel immediately prior to the accident. However, the second scenario is Tucker’s vehicle experienced a mechanical failure.

Oakley police officers joined firefighters from the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District. In addition, Cal Fire arrived along with AMR paramedics and a CALSTAR helicopter crew.

We would like to extend our sympathies to the bereaved families and friends of Sherman Tucker during this difficult time. We hope the injured victim a fast and steady recovery.
