Dean Barbera Involved in Fatal Sacramento Car Crash

SACRAMENTO, CA (May 22, 2019) – 45-year-old Shelly Rau was struck and killed in a pedestrian accident Wednesday night on Arden Way.

Officials reported the accident around 11:45 PM, on Arden Way. First responders arrived to the area shortly after.

According to reports, Rau was pushing a shopping cart across the road when she was struck by an eastbound black Mercedes Benz SUV.

The driver of the Mercedes was later identified as 52-year-old Dean Marvin Barbera of El Dorado Hills. Barbera attempted to flee after striking Rau, however he was eventually found nearby.

Rau consequently suffered life-threatening injuries as a result of the impact. She was later pronounced dead on scene.

Officers also reported that Barbera was extremely intoxicated. He was eventually arrested and booked into Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of DUI causing fatal injuries, and hit-and-run.

Barbera is currently held on a $100,000 bail. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the CHP’s North Sacramento office at (916) 348-2300 or (916) 798-0975.

The surrounding area was blocked off for a brief time while crews worked to clean the scene. No further information has been released at this time.
