Sgt. Bobby Meredith Hurt after Jessyca Mendez Hits Patrol Vehicle in Modesto
MODESTO, CA (July 23, 2019) – An alleged DUI crash on Sylvan Avenue left an officer injured early Thursday morning.
Modesto Police Department said the crash occurred near the Dragoo Park Drive intersection about 1:48 a.m.
Sgt. Bobby Meredith was driving a patrol unit eastbound on Sylvan Avenue. He reduced his speed when he saw a fallen bicycle in a lane. He checked whether a vehicle hit the bicyclist and was lying in or near the roadway.
21-year-old Jessyca Mendez rear-ended Meredith’s patrol vehicle even though it had its emergency lights on. Her car subsequently spun out of control and hit a nearby building.
Jessyca Mendez immediately got out of her vehicle and attempted to run away. However, the sergeant caught her. A witness reported that Mendez was driving at high speed prior to the collision.
Emergency responders took Meredith to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. On the other hand, Mendez was not injured in the crash. Officers later booked her into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center.
In the meantime, a test showed that Mendez’s blood alcohol was twice the legal limit of .08 percent. Jessyca Mendez now faces felony charges of hit-and-run and DUI.
