Car Loses Control and Crashes into Police SUV on Highway 101 in Sausalito Leaving One Person Dead

SAUSALITO, CA (November 24, 2018) – A woman was killed and a CHP officer was injured following a traffic collision Saturday morning in Sausalito.

The collision happened just before 8:00 a.m. on southbound Highway 101 near Spencer Avenue.

According to reports, two CHP officers were traveling southbound on Highway 101 when they saw an SUV had broken down on the opposite side of the highway, blocking the slow lane.

The officers pulled up behind the disabled vehicle and started to place flares out to warn motorists of the vehicle blocking traffic. They could not move the vehicle so they set flares and shut down the lanes.

As they were securing the scene, one of the officers who was behind the patrol vehicle noticed an out of control Toyota Corolla spinning towards him. He dived into the back seat of the patrol car just before it was hit by the Corolla.

He was transported to Marin General Hospital with moderate injuries.

The female driver of the Corolla was extricated from the car by Southern Marin Fire District crews. She was rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her identity has not yet been released pending notification of her family members.

The other officer and the driver of the disabled SUV were unharmed.

The patrol car was heavily damaged and its back window was smashed.

According to the CHP, weather and slippery pavement were contributing factors of the crash.

Three southbound lanes of Highway 101 near Spencer Avenue were closed for several hours while CHP investigation team examine the crash. All lanes were cleared around 12:30 p.m.
