18-Year-Old Man Fatally Injured in Accident near Interstate Highway 880

SAN JOSE, CA (May 20, 2018) – A multi-vehicle collision on US Highway 101 claimed the life of a man, early Sunday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly collision happened at about 1:13 AM on the northbound 101 Highway, just South of Oakland Road and near the northbound Interstate Highway 880 on-ramp.

A 1997 Acura TL, driven by a 16-year-old male, jumped a curb near the on-ramp and went down an embankment onto the right shoulder of the highway. The vehicle came to rest in the No 1 and No 2 lanes and was left disabled from the damage. For unknown reasons, a Toyota Camry, driven by a 69-year-old man, struck the disabled Acura.

The impact of the collision killed an 18-year-old passenger sitting in the Acura. His identity was not immediately available. The 16-year-old driver suffered major injuries and was transported to the hospital for the treatment, while the Camry driver was reportedly unharmed and released.

After the collision, a white van crashed into both the Acura and the Camry, before swerving and striking another vehicle. Authorities confirmed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol when the collision happened. No one was reported injured in this incident.

A SigAlert was issued by the CHP, temporarily closing all northbound lanes near the Oakland Road exit. Affected lanes were later reopened to the public around 6 AM. Authorities continue their investigation at this time. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the police by calling Officer J Berry at (408) 467-5400.

We extend our sincerest sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased. May he rest in peace.
