Wrong-Way Head-On Collision on 8 Freeway at Sunset Cliffs Boulevard

SAN DIEGO, CA (February 26, 2018) – A 35-year-old wrong-way driver of San Diego was killed and two women were injured in a head-on wrong-way crash on 8 Freeway on Monday.

The two East County women were seriously injured after the man’s sedan crashed head-on with another car at a transition ramp of 8 Freeway at Sunset Cliffs Boulevard at around 1:54 AM.

The wrong-way Volkswagen Jetta driver got onto Interstate 8 at Sunset Cliffs Boulevard heading eastbound in the westbound lanes, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Tommy Doerr.

The Jetta the plowed into the front end of a Toyota Camry as it was on the ramp that connects the northbound 5 Freeway to the westbound 8 Freeway. A Jeep Cherokee behind the Camry slowed down, but the 25-year-old Los Angeles driver was unable to stop, hitting the rear end of the Toyota.

The Jetta driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the 22-year-old Santee woman driving the Camry suffered major injuries and was brought to Scripps Mercy Hospital. The 36-year-old El Cajon woman who was a passenger in the Camry sustained moderate injuries and was transported to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. Nobody in the Jeep was reported to be injured.

The crash shut down the northbound 5 Freeway transition to both directions of westbound 8 Freeway, for about three hours. All lanes were accessible just before 5:00 AM. CHP accident specialists continue to investigate the incident, and the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office was expected to establish if the wrong-way driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
