Lyft Passenger Dies in Early Morning DUI Crash on Highway 163 in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA (March 23, 2019) – A Lyft passenger was killed when the vehicle he was riding in was rear-ended by a DUI driver early Saturday morning in San Diego.

The fatal crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on southbound Highway 163 at Quince Drive near Balboa Park.

A white Mazda sedan, which was being used as a Lyft, carrying the driver and two passengers in the back seat, was rear-ended by a 2016 Lexus sedan. Both cars ended up drifting off the highway, landing in a ditch off the shoulder.

The impact caused fatal injuries to a 40-year-old San Francisco man riding in the Mazda’s left backseat. Firefighters had to break apart the top of the car to remove the man’s body. His name has not yet been released pending notification of his family members. He was wearing his seat belt.

The right backseat passenger, a 33-year-old San Leandro man who was not wearing his seat belt, was ejected from the car and taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital with major injuries.

The Lyft driver, a 27-year-old Santee resident, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center.

The driver of the Lexus, a 22-year-old woman, sustained major injuries and was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital. She is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.

All southbound lanes were shut down for about 20 minutes while the investigation was being conducted.
