2 Dead and 4 Injured in Two-Vehicle Collision near Mill Creek Campground

 
CRESCENT CITY, CA (December 9, 2018) – On Sunday afternoon, two people were killed and four others were injured in an accident on Highway 101. The deceased victims were later identified as 18-year-old Rubi Lopez-Gonzalez and 60-year-old Jose Ramirez of Crescent City.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred at around 2:30 PM on the 101 Freeway, near the Mill Creek Campground.
 
Officials stated that a Saturn sedan, driven by 45-year-old Miguelina Gonzalez, was traveling northbound when it crossed into oncoming traffic. There, it collided with a southbound Winnebago motorhome, driven by 60-year-old Paul Peeples of McKinleyville.
 
First responders arrived at the crash site and pronounced Ramirez, who was a passenger in the Saturn, dead at the scene. Another passenger, Lopez-Gonzalez, was transported to Redding Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Gonzalez sustained major injuries, while a male juvenile sustained moderate injuries. They were transported to Sutter Coast Hospital, but there is no update on their current conditions.
 
Peeples and his passenger, 29-year-old Justine Rudi Castro of McKinleyville, suffered minor injuries. They were also transported to Sutter Hospital.
 
CHP reported that it was raining at the time of the crash, and stated everyone was wearing their seatbelts. The Highway was closed for about one hour, while clearing operations and preliminary investigation took place in the area.
 
No additional information has been released, as the investigation continues.
