Jovan Vaca Faces Charges in Toppenish Injury Collision
Toppenish, WA (June 1, 2023) – On Saturday, Ronald Sheets, a 68-year-old Zillah man, sustained injuries following a DUI collision on Asotin Road.
The Washington State Patrol (WSP) responded to the two-car crash along Highway 22.
Officers said Jovan Vaca missed a stop sign and rammed into Sheets’ driver-side door at a high speed. Sheets was thrown from his car and landed 5 to 6 feet away.
Immediately, the paramedics airlifted him to the hospital for his injuries.
WSP Trooper Chris Thorson said, “Both drivers were transported to the hospital. The victim driver was actually airlifted over to Harborview where he’s currently at right now in serious to critical condition.”
Moreover, Vaca admitted he took methamphetamine that same day. Officers said Vaca is facing vehicular assault charges.
The authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the DUI collision on Asotin Road to contact them.
Always pay attention whenever you are on the road. Do your best to avoid accidents and make sure that you are following the correct driving speed.
However, most importantly, let us be responsible enough and never drink whenever driving.
Injuries in Traffic Crash
Despite the additional safety features on newer vehicle models, crash rates in Washington continue to increase, rather than decrease.
As a matter of fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), two out of three motorists will be injured in a traffic accident during their life.
Sad but true, auto accidents just like the Toppenish injury collision are a major public health threat. They are a leading cause of death for individuals ages 5-64.
That is why it is valuable to know what to do if you get involved in a motor vehicle accident.
Meanwhile, here are some of the things that we can do to practice defensive driving and avoid accidents:
- First, always drive at a controllable speed.
- Then, it is also important not to assume you know the other driver’s intention.
- Also, be prepared to positively react to other drivers.
- This one, we should never neglect. Yield at intersections, even if you have the right of way.
- Most importantly, stay focused on the road. Removing all distractions such as mobile phone use, and unstrapped toddlers, can help us focus on the road.
