Roman Moraga Dies After Crash on Interstate 25 in Santa Fe
Santa Fe, NM (January 8, 2025) – 67-year-old Roman Moraga died in a crash on Interstate 25.
State police report that a man died early Wednesday morning in a wrong-way crash involving a Santa Fe police officer on Interstate 25, north of Bernalillo.
According to a New Mexico State Police spokesperson, 67-year-old Roman Moraga was driving a 2006 Dodge Charger the wrong way on the interstate when he collided with an off-duty Santa Fe police officer traveling south after completing a shift.
The crash occurred around 1:15 a.m. near Santa Ana Pueblo.
Emergency responders pronounced Moraga dead at the scene, according to the state Office of the Medical Investigator.
The off-duty officer sustained nonlife-threatening injuries, received treatment at a hospital, and was later released.
State police suspect alcohol contributed to the crash, and their investigation is ongoing.
Santa Fe Police Deputy Chief Ben Valdez confirmed in an email that the officer involved was driving home after work, with a supervisor following behind.
The supervisor managed to avoid the collision, stopped interstate traffic to prevent further injuries, assessed the crash victims’ conditions, and immediately called for law enforcement and emergency services to respond.
