Driver Arrested in N Broadway Fatal Crash
Escondido, CA (April 28, 2024) – 13-year-old Rodrigo Tapia Junior suffered fatal injuries in a N Broadway DUI collision Saturday night.
The deadly collision happened around 10 p.m. at the intersection with Country Club Lane.
Investigators said 20-year-old Alexander Tito Oroz was southbound and ran a red light when he struck an eastbound driver. Tapia Junior was a rear passenger in Oroz’s vehicle.
Responding officers located several people with injuries, one of them critically injured.
Immediately, the responding officers started life-saving measures until Escondido Fire paramedics arrived and transported an adult male from the other vehicle to Sharp Memorial Hospital. The authorities expect him to survive. The rescuers also took 18-year-old Jasmine Tapia to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with internal bleeding. She is expected to be released on Monday. Additionally, they also took Tapia Junior who was declared deceased at Palomar Medical Center.
All three victims were from Escondido.
Moreover, officers consider alcohol as a factor in the collision.
The authorities arrested Oroz on suspicion of felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.
Troopers took Oroz to Tri-City Hospital for medical release, with pending booking into Vista jail on the charges.
