3 Dead and 6 Hurt in San Diego Accident on 1500 Block of B Street
SAN DIEGO, CA (March 17, 2021) – Monday morning, three people, including Rodney Diffendal, 40, died, and six others suffered injuries in a crash on 1500 block of B Street.
According to reports, just after 9:00 a.m., a westbound Volvo station wagon traveled on the road. Then, it steered to the right off the road in the 1500 block of B Street.
The vehicle hit multiple transients on a wide sidewalk amid several tents and some personal items.
Three people succumbed to injuries at the scene, including Mr. Diffendal, said SDPD Chief David Nisleit.
Meanwhile, paramedics transported five others to hospitals for treatment of severe to less serious injuries. Furthermore, another person received treatment at the scene for minor trauma.
“I don’t know if people were sleeping if people were sitting there (at the time of the crash),” Nisleit said.
Meanwhile, 71-year-old Craig Martin Voss of San Diego, the involved driver, attempted to help the victims before the responders arrived.
Eventually, authorities arrested Voss on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, causing great bodily injury during the commission of a felony and DUI.
“As we have learned that all nine victims are a part of our unsheltered community, this is stark evidence of the need to find permanent solutions to the homelessness crisis so that no San Diegans are forced to seek shelter in unsafe places, such as under bridges and tunnels that vehicles pass through,” Council President Pro Tem Stephen Whitburn said.
The street remained blocked during the investigation and cleanup.
