NYPD Employee Dies after Tire Falls Off Garbage Truck and Flies into Windshield
BROOKLYN, NY (August 1, 2018) – A man was killed Wednesday morning after his vehicle was hit by a loose tire along Gowanus Expressway.
As per reports, the unfortunate accident took place at around 6:40 AM. A 2003 Chevy Tracker, driven by 64-year-old Staten Island resident Robert Martinez, was eastbound when a tire came loose from a westbound sanitation vehicle. The tire flew and slammed into the Chevy’s windshield, leaving Martinez with serious head injuries.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment and medical evaluation. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by medical staff. Meanwhile, the driver of the truck and a passenger remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Century Waste Services, the owner of the garbage truck, offered their condolences to the victim’s family.
No charges were filed against anyone at this time, but an investigation is ongoing. No further updates are available to the public at this time.
