Robert Beland Dead, Elizabeth Martin Injured, Ryder Stapp Arrested in Eureka Collision

EUREKA, CA (July 1, 2019)Robert Beland died and Elizabeth Martin sustained injuries after a car crashed into their house on Friday, June 28.

Around 10:20 p.m., Humboldt Area CHP responded to a call of a vehicle crash on Humboldt Hill Road north of Fisher Lane.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a 2005 Ford F250 pickup that crashed into a house. In addition, officers say the pickup was driven by 25-year-old Ryder Stapp of Fields Landing.

Officers determined that Stapp traveled northbound on Humboldt Hill Road at a high rate of speed. After that, he allowed the Ford to travel off the roadway. It went through a parking lot, and eventually crashed with a house.

After that, Stapp tried to flee the scene on foot. However, citizens at the scene detained Stapp until CHP arrived.

The residents of the house, 64-year-old Robert Beland and 62-year-old Elizabeth Martin, were in bed at the time of the incident. They both suffered significant injuries related to the collision.

Emergency medical personnel provided medical aid to the involved parties. They rushed Mr. Beland to St. Joseph’s hospital for further treatment. However, he later died of his injuries.

In addition, paramedics also transported Mrs. Martin to the hospital for further treatment.

Authorities subsequently arrested Stapp. As a result, they booked him into the Humboldt County Jail for charges related to hit-and-run, DUI, and vehicular manslaughter.

Officers believe that excessive speed and alcohol are factors in this collision. However, the California Highway Patrol Humboldt Area is still investigating the incident.

We would like to extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the family and friends of Robert Beland. We hope they find strength and comfort as they grieve over their loss during this tragic time.
