40-Year-Old Bicyclist Struck and Killed by Two Cars on Highway 160 Near Del Paso Boulevard

SACRAMENTO, CA (January 20, 2018) – A man biking down the 160 Freeway was hit and killed by two cars late Saturday night around 10:30 PM.

According to CHP Officer Chad Hertzell, Nelson was biking northbound on the right shoulder of Highway 160, when he tried to cross the freeway to take the left lane exit for Del Paso Blvd. He rode into the path of travel of a Lexus going 55 mph in the left lane, and was struck.

The man was ejected from his bicycle onto the road, and hit by another vehicle, a Ford SUV that was driving behind the Lexus. Sacramento Metropolitan Fire personnel pronounced the cyclist dead at the scene.

The male victim was identified on Sunday morning by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as 40-year-old Ricky J. Nelson.

Both drivers stayed at the scene of the accident and cooperated with police officials. There was no suspicion of Drug or alcohol use, and no charges will filed.

Hertzell stated that the road where Nelson was riding his bike is prohibited for pedestrians and bicyclists. It is also very difficult for drivers to see people in the roadway in that area he said in a report.

Heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Ricky J. Nelson.
