Collin Lewis Faces Multiple Charges after DUI Solo-Car Crash on SR 11

SKAGIT COUNTY, WA (April 17, 2018) – A DUI crash on Chuckanut Drive left four people injured, early Tuesday evening.

Two of the injured individuals were identified as 28-year-old Resa Gipson of Bellingham, and 27-year-old Collin Lewis from Ferndale. The other two passengers in the vehicle, whose ages ranged from fourteen to sixteen, were unidentified.

According to State Troopers, the crash occurred at around 5:38 PM. A green 2000 Nissan Maxima, driven by Lewis, was head southbound on State Route 11 near milepost 12.5. The vehicle was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed when it approached a curve, slammed into a guardrail, and plunged 100 feet off the embankment.

Gipson, who was not secured in a seat belt, sustained injuries and was airlifted to the Harbor Medical Center in Seattle for treatment. Two teenagers, a 16-year-old male and a 14-year-old female, were treated and evaluated at the scene by emergency responders. Lewis also suffered injuries and required hospitalization; he was taken to the Skagit Valley Hospital.

Officers determined that speed was the main cause of the crash. In addition, they charged Lewis with vehicular assault, first-degree driving while license restricted/suspended, felony driving under the influence, and ignition interlock violation. No other information is available at this time.

When driving on a highway, it is important to watch your speed and keep a look out for road curves ahead. Always obey traffic rules to avoid possible accidents and unforeseen tragedies. Do not get behind the wheel of a vehicle if you find yourself under the influence of drugs or aclhol.
